Cardiovascular Nursing

Cardiovascular nurses specialize in coronary heart health and generally practice in hospital settings, therapy centers or any agency dealing with heart rehabilitation. Their practice covers cardiovascular health promotion, disease prevention, acute/chronic and episodic interventions, and cardiac rehabilitation. The aim of cardiovascular health promotion is to develop an experience of health and well being for individuals, which also helps decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease. This includes assessing and enhancing current heart health behaviours in the client’s environment and lifestyle. In caring for clients with existing cardiovascular disease, the nurse will deal with lifestyle behaviours and/or environmental factors that reduce existing or possible cardiovascular risks.

For registered nurses, the Canadian Nurses Association offers the following certification credential: CCN(C) - Certified in Cardiovascular Nursing Canada
