Emergency Nursing

Emergency nurses possess with a body of knowledge and skills to provide diverse care, encompassing all specialties of nursing. This nursing specialty services clients of all ages through nursing assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation of perceived, actual, or sudden problems (psychological, physical, and/or social). The emergency nurse must be structured and directed, yet be capable of operating in a uniquely demanding, often chaotic environment that experiences unplanned situations needing sound judgement, excellent critical thinking skills, and time constrained interventions to deliver priority care. These nurses must have an excellent ability to interact with clients, significant others, and health team members under high stress conditions. Emergency nurses are typically found in hospital emergency departments or urgent care centres.

For registered nurses, the Canadian Nurses Association offers the following certification credential: ENC(C) - Emergency Nurses Certified Canada
