Perinatal Nursing

Perinatal nurses typically work with mothers and their families before, during and after pregnancy. They provide education and support to clients as they transition to parenthood, while promoting and maintaining health status. Some of their roles involve assisting in childbirth, promoting bonding between mother and child, and teaching breastfeeding techniques. Perinatal nurses work in a multitude of settings such as hospitals, breastfeeding clinics, community health centres, public health departments, and in client homes.

For registered nurses, the Canadian Nurses Association offers the following certification credential: PNC(C) - Perinatal Nurse Certified Canada

For a more detailed description of the perinatal nursing role visit the National Association: Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses - Canada (AWHONN - Canada)
